![]() ![]() (That’s in your home folder’s Library folder, which is non-trivial to access for most users since the Library folder is hidden by default.) From a consistency and coherency point of view, the new standard location is a good thing, since users don’t have to keep track of where each individual service might have its files. All cloud-storage services must now store their files in ~/Library/CloudStorage. The first change is where local files are stored. Some Dropbox users even report one Mac being upgraded to the new File Provider approach, while others continue to use the kernel extension.Īlthough it’s good to have cloud storage integrated into macOS in a coherent fashion, the switch to Apple’s File Provider extension brings with it two key changes that will require adjustments in how you work. It can be hard to tell since cloud storage providers often roll out changes over time or to subsets of customers to test user response, identify concerns, and reduce support loads. My understanding is that Box, Google, and Microsoft have migrated their Mac users to the File Provider approach, whereas Dropbox-probably the most popular among everyday Mac users-has only recently started to encourage those outside its beta program to switch (while others are still being asked to join the beta). That hasn’t happened yet, but Apple often gives developers several years to get with the program. The cloud storage companies undoubtedly felt they had little choice about adopting the File Provider extension because Apple said it would be deprecating kernel extensions at some point. (Everything I say below I’ve tested in macOS 13.2.1 Ventura-it’s possible, even likely, that some details are different in Monterey.) The cloud storage services will likely pull support for older systems at some point, but there’s no telling when that will happen. Earlier versions of macOS don’t support it, so nothing changes for those running older systems for now. The File Provider extension first appeared in macOS 12.1 Monterey, though Apple’s Developer site suggests that it may have subsequently been made available in macOS 10.15 Catalina. I touched on this move a year ago in “ Cloud Storage Forecast Unsettled, with Possible Storms” (4 February 2022). ![]() It provides an Apple-approved framework for integrating remote files into macOS and displaying them in the Finder. Prey was positively reviewed by critics at release and considered one of the best games of 2017 by several gaming magazines and websites. He often remarked: "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." Thompson died by suicide at the age of 67, following a series of health problems. He was known for his lifelong use of alcohol and illegal drugs, his love of firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authority. He continued to write sporadically for various outlets, including Rolling Stone, Playboy, Esquire and until the end of his life. Most of his work from 1979 to 1994 was collected in The Gonzo Papers. He did continue to write for alternative newspapers, working as a columnist for the mainstream San Francisco Examiner for much of the late 1980s and early 1990s. After several high-profile stories were quashed by the upper management of Rolling Stone, he found it increasingly difficult to get his work into mainstream outlets. Thompson's output declined from the mid-1970s, as he struggled with the consequences of fame, and complained that he could no longer merely report on events, as he was too easily recognized. He covered George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign for Rolling Stone and later collected the stories in book form as Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72. He became known for his dislike of Richard Nixon, who he claimed represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character". His campaign was chronicled in the documentary film Freak Power: The Ballot or the Bomb. Thompson ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, in 1970 on the Freak Power ticket. I found a great tool to do this called Phoshare, created by Google! Tilman Sporkert, who works for Google in San Francisco, created the tool in his “20% time” - the time Google employees get to pursue projects of interest to them and the community. I’ve now figured out how to do it! Full details after the jump. Although some people might say that backing up the full resolution photos is important to them, to me, the most important thing is making sure those frozen memories don’t get lost - and if I downscale them to fit within 1920x1920px, then I still have a high definition, albeit not camera-resolution, version of the photo. I like Dropbox (my referral link included in that link) because it works so quietly and reliably in the background, but you could use any online backup service. The ‘ideal’ solution I had in mind was to do Time Machine backups constantly to my Time Capsule, as well as a fallback backup of downscaled resolution photos to an online backup location. Simply dropping the iPhoto library into an online backup program like Carbonite or Mozy isn’t viable, because uploading 200GB of data takes so long that it basically never completes - or the backup system gets so far behind that you’d be losing a lot of new photos if your house burned down. (Or, if my house was burgled and both the MacBook Pro and Time Capsule were stolen - which actually happened to a family member of mine.) However, one problem I’ve been seeking an answer to for years now is how to backup my photos off-site, in case a house fire takes out both my MacBook Pro and my Time Capsule backup. Obviously, at that price, it’s a ludicrously overpriced option at $3.50/GB compared to smaller, cheaper SSDs, typically around $2.50/GB, or mechanical hard drives at about $0.14/GB, but I wanted to have a boot drive on which I could have my full iPhoto library so I could work with pictures much more quickly (and boy, does it make a big difference.) It’s so big that it convinced me to part with $1800 (Australian) to get the 512GB SSD Apple is making an option with the latest MacBook Pros. Mine is currently sitting at 66,431 images and is 220GB on disk. If, like me, you took Steve Jobs at his word when he said iPhoto 6 onwards could support up to 250,000 images, and you’ve been piling them in ever since, you’ve probably got a very large iPhoto library. ![]() |
